Could a weight loss medication be right for you?
Weight loss medications have been around for a long time. Many people have heard of phentermine and this is still a commonly used option. Not to be confused with fen-phen, which was a combination of phentermine and fenfluramine, the latter of which was found to cause detrimental effects on heart valves. This medication was taken off the market in 1997. This scare has caused some people and providers to shy away from weight loss medications, which is unfortunate as these can be a great supportive tool in your weight loss journey.
There are several newer options available which have been thoroughly studied and approved by the FDA. These include Contrave, Belviq, Qsymia and Saxenda. All of these medications act in some way to decrease appetite and/or cravings. Studies have shown anywhere from 5-14% total body weight loss when taking these medications, as well as improvements in blood sugar, cholesterol and blood pressure.
So would one of these medications be right for you? Weight loss medications are typically indicated for those with a BMI >30 or >27 with a weight related comorbidity such as hypertension or type II diabetes. There are many factors we take into account when helping you to decide if one of these medications would be an option, and which one would be best for you. We consider factors such as lifestyle, age, medical conditions, other medications and overall goals.
Any medication may have side effects. We can help you to choose which option would be the safest and most appropriate for you. Sometimes you may need to try more than one to find the best fit.
